A new season of The Great British Sewing Bee is to LifeStyle! Here's everything you need to know about your favourite judges, Esme Young and Patrick Grant.
What is The Great British Sewing Bee?
Available to watch on LifeStyle, The Great British Sewing Bee is a competition show, where amateur sewers take on challenges, all in the hopes to be named Britain's best home sewer.
You can catch the season 6 premiere of The Great British Sewing Bee on Wednesday, September 30, 2020, 8:30pm. The new season features ten weeks of the most perplexing patterns, eye-popping transformations and stunning made-to-measure garments yet.
Who is Esme Young?
Esme Young, 71, has been a judge on The Great British Sewing Bee since 2016 when she took over from Claudia Winkelman. She works alongside designer and co-host Patrick Grant.
The Telegraph once labelled the pair as the “trendy versions of Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.”
Esme got her start in the early 1970s, opening her own shop, Swanky Modes, with three friends in Camden - a trendy area of London.
Now, as well as a TV star, she is also an accomplished costume designer, creating iconic outfits for huge blockbuster films, as well as a senior lecturer at the famous Central St Martin’s college in London. At St Martin's, Esme teaches Innovative Pattern Cutting for graduate and professional level students.
What was Swanky Modes like?
Esme’s brand Swanky Modes was known for their fitted body con dresses, big revealing cut-outs and a punk-inspired look.
Their designs were on the cutting edge of street fashion, donned by some of the time’s leading fashionistas, such as Grace Jones and Cher. Swanky Modes' clothes were featured in big-name publications like Vogue and ID and photographed by the likes of Helmut Newton, David Bailey, and Nick Knight
What are some famous Esme Young film costumes?
Esme created many iconic looks for huge films, such as Trainspotting, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, 28 Days Later and Appropriate Adult.
Reflecting on her career so far, she has said that her favourite costume she’s ever made was Bridget Jones’ famous bunny outfit in the British smash hit Bridget Jones’ Diary.
What is Esme Young’s net worth?
Speaking to This is Money, Esme made it clear that, despite her success, she has never been particularly wealthy. She still rents her modest London home and has not saved for a pension when she retires.
“Even making clothes for Hollywood films, you do not get paid silly money. It is hard work and takes time," she said to This is Money. "Appearing on the BBC did pay well, but it was not a huge amount of money."
Who is Patrick Grant?
Patrick Grant, 48, is a Scottish menswear designer and, since 2013, co-host of The Great British Sewing Bee with Esme Young. He is currently at the helm of E.Tautz, a Saville Row tailor that opened in 1861.
What does Patrick Grant do?
Patrick is the owner and Creative Director for E.Tautz, which he acquired in 2005 and saved from the brink of bankruptcy. It is now a thriving tailoring brand.
Patrick has a history of reviving Mayfair tailoring houses. He got his start at Norton & Sons, a historic tailoring house, founded in 1821.
With no experience in the fashion industry, Patrick sold everything he owned to make the brand profitable again. He succeeded, partnering with huge designers, such as Christopher Kane.
His hard work was recognised in 2010, when he won menswear designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards.
Is Patrick Grant married?
The Times reported that, in 2016, he split from his girlfriend of eight years, fellow designer Katie Hillier. He moved from their shared homes in the upscale London neighbourhood of Marylebone and picturesque Oxfordshire to a bachelor pad in South London.
He is yet to settle down with someone since the break-up. Patrick said to The Times that he was in a "dating daze", but stays away from Tinder.
