The Great Australian Bake Off: Why Laura left the Shed

It was announced this week that our youngest-ever contestant, Laura, will not be returning to the competition.

From time to time the bakers get sick and aren't able to compete in the competition, but they're usually back the following week and fully recovered.

Unfortunately, this was not the case, as it was announced that Laura will not be coming back.

So, what went wrong? We caught up The Great Australian Bake Off's youngest-ever contestant to find out why she made the tough decision not to return.

Medical concerns

“I have cholesterol hypertension and neurocardiogenic syncope, which basically means that when my heart and my brain don’t work together I get really dizzy - and if I get overheated I can sometimes pass out.

“I wasn't well that day. I actually did have tablets that I was supposed to be taking, but I wasn’t taking them as I didn’t think they were doing anything for me.

"It was a young foolish mistake. Because after that day, I am sure to take them every single day and I have never felt the same since.”

A long history

“There have been a lot of things that were happening since I was little and nobody really knew anything about it. Just before I went on the show, my doctor gave me some pills and I didn't think I needed them, but turns out I did!

"There’s no cure for it, I just have to take pills and keep on top of it. I should’ve been more cautious of my health but at the time I really wasn't.

“I don’t remember the episode. I remember little bits, but overall I don't remember what went on as I was so out of it."

New beginnings

Despite her time in the Shed coming to an abrupt end, Laura still loved her time on Bake Off, as it opened up a whole new world for her.

"Meeting everyone was amazing, I have so many new friends and I still talk to mostly everyone almost daily! Even meeting Matt and Maggie was such a highlight. My grandma loved Maggie, but she's since passed away. I know she would be so proud!

"Bake Off was great becasuse I always said I wouldn't do baking as a career, because I didn't want to end up hating it... but as soon as I finsihed on the show, I started my own business and now I bake for half of my job!"
