A custom range hood is fabricated; and, on the roof, the chimney is built. Also: the options for the first floor, including the living room panels.

The new foundation is parged to match the old stucco; the new master bath-shower is drained; the electrician starts work in the new powder room; and the living room windows are replaced.

Episode 9

Series 38 · Episode 9

A new front porch is framed using custom cut pieces; a marble quarry is visited; and new colour combinations for the exterior are considered. Also: fixing the original stucco panels.

Episode 10

A new shed is built; copper is installed on the front porch; the windows are trimmed with a PVC product; and the new boiler is installed. Also: An energy-efficient home built by This Old House Magazine is spotlighted.

Electrical cables are buried; porch base columns are built; kitchen cabinets are installed; and the front gable is trimmed.

New shingles are installed; radiant tubing is installed on the first floor; the fireplace is given a makeover; and the side decks and rails are built.

Exterior decorative features are spotlighted, including a roof detail over the bank of windows, refinished front door and evergreen trees on the edges of the property. Also: lazure painting in a bedroom.

Ship lap is chosen for the third-floor walls while reclaimed granite is used for steps, a marble slab is cut for the kitchen island and a cast stone mantel is built around the fireplace in the family room.

The kitchen island countertop is installed, work commences on a fieldstone wall in the front yard, wallpaper covers a new secret door upstairs, and the finished heating, cooling and ventilation system is examined.

A tour of the competed project house, including the new addition in the back, updated front hall, dining room and pantry, expanded master suite, new bathroom, and new front porch.

The renovation of a formerly abandoned home in Detroit begins.

Episode 18

Detroit's efforts to eliminate blight are discussed with Mayor Mike Duggan. At the house, a security system is installed, and insulation is blown in from the outside.

A camera is snaked down the main plumbing stack to check for any major blockages to the street, a leaky parapet at the front of the house is worked on, and the kitchen is opened up.

Episode 20

Peeling paint is removed, rough plumbing using PEX begins, and the issues with the leaded stained-glass windows in the living room are examined.

Episode 21

A modern solution is used for some traditional decorative moulding, the plumbing fixtures are selected, and the new kitchen ceiling strapping is installed.

Episode 22

Rough wiring is installed in the kitchen, a new HVAC system goes in, and new fascia is installed.

The damaged oak flooring is fixed, and the front steps are repaired.

Episode 24

The restored leaded glass bay windows are installed, and tile is laid in the kitchen. Also, urban farming in Detroit.

The family starts painting, decorative moulding is repaired, and the fireplace gets a face lift with a new tile surround.

A tour of the completed project in Detroit spotlights the major areas of improvement and preservation.
