Selling Houses Australia

Shaynna Blaze's editor's letter

I've been far bolder in season 11 of Selling Houses than I have been in years past.

And that's because the way trends are and the way the market is allows you to be far more individual in what you do with your interiors when you are selling.

It used to be the rule that you kept things very neutral and kept things safe. But actually a lot of times when the house wasn't selling this season it was because the house lacked personality. The bones were there but people were too scared to put personality in because the house was on the market.

I had a lot more freedom to do really bold colours, bold patterns and very different looks that have probably shocked a lot of people but works really well with the house. And I've been really excited by that.

Having said that about being individual, it's still very important that you are careful about the things you put out on show. I'm still surprised by the number of homes we go to where there are just too many eclectic things - I'm not saying it's clutter - but just more bizarre and eclectic things that don't work and don't need to be there. So you still need to contain that overload of a certain look.

It's the human element that keeps me coming back to Selling Houses Australia year after year. I get such a sense of joy out of helping homeowners solve their problems and then there are those two crazy guys I work with! We have so much fun that even though the work is hard and the travel and time away from your family is tough we all really miss it once the season is over.

And then there's the fact that with every home there's a new problem to solve because every house is different. While we may have a great plan, once you start things can go wrong - and we've only got two days to work it out and find alternatives. It's always a bit of an adrenaline rush that during the reveal at the end I still stand there and go, "We really did that! There was a moment when I didn't think it could all happen."

I've taken some videos behind the scenes to share my design process which you can find here. I've also written a guide on how to personalise your home without following trends, sourced the best whites for every home and found some great new ways to update your home without breaking the bank.

I hope you enjoy.
