Love It Or List It Australia

Reno Recap: Sandringham, VIC

Peter and Jackie have different ideas about their ideal home. Peter likes the classic bungalow look, whereas Jackie sees the beauty in sleek lines and modern structures. With two sons coming into the mix, the couple no longer have time to make this property their ultimate home. So, will they 'Love It' or 'List It'?

The suburbs of Sandringham is a highly-sought-after area situated 40 minutes south-east of the Melbourne CBD. Peter and Jackie's Californian bungalow has character on the outside, but the inside is an '80s renovation gone wrong.

At the front, there is a formal dining room and living room, then three good-sized bedrooms, one with an en-suite. A family bathroom and compact kitchen that leads to the lounge room. Most of the rooms are tiny, pokey and dark, but despite this, the property is still worth $1.6million.

Reasons to love it

Peter has fond memories of the boys being raised in this home, with two living areas, high ceilings and sees a lot of potential to be had.

Reasons to list it

For Jackie, she's ready to move on to an open plan layout, as the floor plan doesn't work for her family.

Too many rooms are underutilised, and the dark, small rooms are too pokey. She also wants a fourth bedroom.

Neale's design idea

For a healthy budget of $200,000, Neale and his team built an eight-metre extension and knocked out existing walls, in order to give them a blank canvas to work with.

An open plan kitchen, flowing into a new dining area and then into a new living zone, all lit with skylights, opened up space to give an uninterrupted view from kitchen to the garden, perfect for watching the kids.

Repurposing the formal dining room will also give the family their much-desired fourth bedroom.

Andrew's pitch to sell

With $1.9 million to spend, Andrew had his work cut out for him. Sandringham is a premium suburb, so the money may not stretch to four bedrooms, two living areas and a modern layout.

Firstly, the couple saw a brand new home in Hampton. With four bedrooms, open plan living, large kitchen and his and hers wardrobes, Jackie liked the home a lot, but a dealbreaker for the pair was the shared wall and smaller yard for $1.8 to $2 million.

Again in Hampton, Andrew uncovered a smaller property, albeit free-standing. With four bedrooms, modern kitchen and beautiful backyard for $1.7 to $1.8 million, Peter was beginning to see the benefits of moving away from their current home.

Lastly, Andrew took the couple to Brighton East. A bit further inland allowed Andrew to stretch Peter and Jackie's budget. A four-bedroom home on a 600 sq metre block with luxury finishes, huge amounts of space and a practical layout enamoured both Peter and Jackie, especially after they were told the price guide was between $1.75 and $1.85 million.

The verdict

Peter and Jackie decided to 'Love It' and 'List It!' They're holding onto the house to further renovate it, before selling up and moving on... but haven't agreed on how long they'll be there for.
