Five young men and women gather at the Regency House for a summer long house party and a chance to enjoy Jane Austen style romance. The aspiring Mr Darcys and Miss Bennets get the chance to live and find love by the rules of the great age of romance. For over two months these young people live in a country house exactly as it would have been in the early 1800s, complete with 12 footmen, 17 maids and 32 chamber pots.
Nestled deep in the rolling hills of the Herefordshire countryside, Kentchurch Court has been painstakingly restored back to its Regency heyday. Any modern amenities, including the plumbing and electricity, have been stripped out. In their place there is household staff of 40 specially trained Regency servants. The pantries, cellars, gardens and stables have all been amply stocked to allow our lucky houseguests to live, love and luxuriate back in the age of romance.
In the eternal battle of love versus money, all of Jane Austen’s heroes and heroines were meant to marry money, and so, in Regency House Party, each of our young men and women will be given an annual income. The most fortunate of the volunteers will be our Mr Darcy. He will be master of an 18th century stately home, deer park, wilderness, stables and an attentive staff – and, with an annual income of £10,000 (equivalent to £300,000 today) he should, in theory, get the pick of the girls. But he'll soon find he has rivals for their hearts among the less well-endowed male guests to his house. Each may not be as rich as their host, but are certainly and perhaps equally as blessed with other charms.
In the highly competitive and highly charged atmosphere of the Regency House Party, marriage, money and morals are all up for grabs. The gentlemen behave like true Regency bucks – talking dirty, drinking excessively and gambling at every opportunity.
The men are allowed to be mad, bad and dangerous to know, but it’s a very different matter when the women air their feelings. In a shower of Regency fireworks, youthful passions are set alight. During their summer together, will these men and women follow their 19th century heads or their 21st century hearts?
