The capital cities of the British Isles play host to a competition to find the UK and Ireland's most talented portrait artists and to celebrate the art of portraiture. Our competition is open to hobbyists, amateurs and professionals in all media. The regional winners will be displayed at The National Portrait Gallery, where an overall winner will be crowned. The winner will receive a £10,000 commission to paint Hilary Mantel, for the British Library's permanent collection. The first programme in the series Portrait Artist of The Year comes from Trafalgar Square London. Twenty one artists paint Actors Juliet Stevenson, Robert Lindsay and Alison Steadman in front of large crowds and against the clock.
