Episode three will chart the lives of three students living in some of the remotest parts of the UK as they leave their single-teacher tiny primary schools for life in the infamous ‘big school’. As well as revealing how life on a small island informs friendships made and broken throughout childhood, this film is also about putting community at the heart of our day to day lives.
Set in the remote Highlands of Scotland (we are still deciding on which schools to focus on), we aim to get a glimpse of the forgotten world of the island primary school and will be there when the time comes to make the trip across the water to a grown-up world.
However, come September 2007 the pupils from the surrounding isles must make the huge physical and psychological journey over to the mainland to be educated and socialise with children whom they know nothing about. It’s a huge transition to successfully navigate and whilst for some it’s an opportunity to broaden horizons, for others it takes them too far out of their comfort zones too quickly.
