How to add shade with style

A large deck needs an equally large amount of shade. Here’s how to add shade while keeping the feeling of space.

I could have used a fixed structure or market umbrellas here in Victoria Park, but they would obstruct the view.

A retractable folding arm awning can be made-to-measure to suit large or small areas.

With the touch of a button, they can extend or fold back onto the wall, looking very sleek and discreet.

There are over a hundred fabric choices – everything from solid colours, to stripes, textures, and even patterns if you're looking to make a real statement.

In this backyard, I’ve gone for grey and white stripes to tie in with the paint colours on the back of the house.

A solid grey fabric would’ve made the area too dark, because of the dark timber decking, so the stripes add some brightness and visual interest to the area.

The stripes tie in with my planting too, because I’ve used grey and white pots to carry on the colour scheme.

The addition of the new awning creates the perfect entertaining area that can be used all year round.

Selling Houses Australia continues on Wednesdays, 8.30pm on Lifestyle.
