The programme follows a Birmingham housing association’s scheme for a co-operative team build. 11 houses are being built by a multi-cultural group of self builders on low or assisted incomes who would not otherwise find it easy to own their homes. Through training, specialising in different skills and the process of building their own homes, and they are entitled to buy a proportion of their houses.
The build goes through various dips – with vandalism, job and family commitments - energy levels and morale drops as 2 winters set in and the team struggle to put in the hours expected on top of a working day. Contractors need to be brought in to push work along. Certain members later have less hours to put in as they get full time work generated by skills they’ve achieved through the project.
After 18 months, most houses are nearly finished to plan.
