Episode Guide

Byron Bay Beach House

Series 3 · Episode 5

Max and Mariella have been planning to relocate to Bryon Bay since the birth of their daughter Ruby. As successful property developers, an ambitious build shouldn't be a problem - but handing over control to a local building team is harder than they thought. From the outset they make fundamental changes to the design making it a headache for the builder and for Max. Something has to give - especially when the bank learns the house they're loaning money on isn't quite the house being built.

What a TOOL!!

$4m for the build (That's around $10,000 psm - really?). I think Grand Designs may have been used as a marketing tool to get top dollar for the sale.

They paid $3.3m for the land. So that's an outlay of almost $7.5m NUTS!

expecting $4.95m at auction this Friday!!!!! what's a few mill loss when you can pretend to be a big shot, fly around the world for a kitchen, have seen these types come and go and always blame their psychiatrists for incorrect medication...

I'm sure the intention was there, but then came the cost blow out and they had to finish. I'm sure lessons are learnt and we shouldn't be so harsh!

Place didn't sell and is now listed with McGrath.

Seriously, what sort of person buys a kitchen from Milan and flies over someone to install it? People live large egos lose sight of reality.

Nice build, but cost blowouts can cause a house to be sold soon after a build and let's not forget any other personal issues that could arise!

What a cold, souless house. Really is the house that money built, totally lacking love and any sort of positive emotion at all. Huge empty spaces with nothing in them to say "home". I couldn't believe the huge empty kitchen when I saw it. Not a single bit of colour, and nothing to say anyone enjoys being in it, let alone cooking in it. It's a house...and that's it.

They took a $2m loss. What a disaster!
