Grand Designs Australia

Episode Guide

Indented Head House

Series 1 · Episode 9

Ian McDonald and Rob Wilhelm are not building an understated new home. Theirs is a Grand Design in its most literal sense. A glass box with a roof like floating wings overlooking Port Phillip Bay on the Bellarine Peninsula – seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, cinema, games room, glass lift, glass panelled pool, rooftop garden – all the bells and whistles, all the boy’s toys. With a construction budget of $1.8 million, the question is will they burst the budget banks and by how much? Get the supplier list for this episode here

Hi Ian and Rob
I have just watched the episode with the building of your house over here in NZ. What a truly beautiful home you have made and no doubt you will enjoy it for many years with all your family and friends. Please can you tell me what colour the walls are painted as I believe that you said they were white but being there are different shades, " white" leaves a lot to the imagination. Your help is appreciated. Thank you.

Strange choice of project again from Grand Designs Australia. I am all for people building the house of their dreams whatever that may be and I'm sure Ian and Rob will enjoy their home, but the show is not called grand houses, or grand processes, but grand designs. To choose to feature a house lacking a considered architectural concept or design is going against the spirit of the programme. Featuring a house purely because it is large and full of the owner's favourite stuff is not good enough.

I continue to wait for Peter to adress some of his concens and ideas to the owners during the building process to generate some sort of dialogue which may improve the finished project. Especially on a project without any professional design input.

Whilst I admire Ian and Robs passion I cant help but be reminded by the figures during the week where Australians have one of the largest carbon footprints per capita in the world. Whilst it is wonderful to be able to indulge ones fantasies and provide some entertainment for families and friends 80+ squares of house for 2 people seems somewhat hedonistic .Even a 6* rating does not allow for the carbon footprint of production and one cant help but wonder if something better could have been produced.
