The Goggleboxers witness the affects of herd mentality in 100 Humans.
On the fifth week of Gogglebox, our favourite couch-potatoes sat down to watch a new Netflix series, 100 Humans where they experienced a scientific experiment on heard mentality - where the definition was a bit lost on some:
"Hoard mentality, I think," Nic states. Mmm not quite.
But Matt Dalton tries to give some clarity when he confidently asks, "Where have you heard that lately? England. Let's build up our immunity with all our people. And guexs what? They've now back-tracked with the herd environ..." but as soon as he hears himself, his oldest daughter cuts in saying, "That's herd immunity. Not herd mentality."
Next, the series explains that a group of 97 people have been instructed to follow a simple dance move with a pie in their hands, with three spots left for others chosen at random who will join them later.
"I mean I do that at aerobics," Kate Dalton casually states. "I just copy what everyone else is doing." But nothing gets past her family, as Matt blurts out, "In the last 28 years, when have you ever done aerobics?"
Kate quietly responds by admitting that it was in fact in her 20s. Still valid!
The Goggleboxers watch the three extra volunteers join the experiment and quickly follow the pie-dance that everyone else is doing.
At the end, all the volunteers smack the cream pies in their face, while only two of the three volunteers follows suit.
While this confirms the experiment that herd mentality does truly exist, Di and Mick are unenthused.
"Well that's great," Di says bluntly. "I'm sure you'll learn a lot from that, won't you."
When Mick asks what they were supposed to take away from the experiment, Di replies, "I don't know. What a pie tastes like when it's smashed in your face? And thank god you're not wearing glasses, I guess."
Glad it was worthwhile!
