Gogglebox best bits: who pays on the first date?

Season 6 is here! In episode 1, the Goggleboxers tackle first date etiquette, Sophie Monk’s chances at finding love, and the spills and thrills of a new water sports show called Cannonball.

Gogglebox Australia is back at last for season 6 – and there have been some changes since we last visited the living rooms of our beloved Goggleboxers.

At Wayne and Tom’s there is more pitter-pattering of paws from a new pup, Adam and Symon have been to Europe, Holly has hit the streets with her dirver’s licence, and Anastasia has a new lounge chair.

While Viv and Zina are travelling the globe, we’ve also been introduced to a brand new trio on the block: Matty, Sarah Marie and Jad

Sophie Monk

This week, the households tuned in to the latest season of The Bachelorette, where Sophie Monk has been brazenly spinning the soppy stereotype on its head. In this episode, Sophie and Luke have a beach date and go ‘sumo surfing’, and Sophie sends her parents in undercover to assess the lot of her potential suitors. In the end, the Goggleboxers aren’t too impressed by Sophie’s decision to hand a rose to Kiwi Ryan or bad-mouthed blond Sam.

The families also tuned into Australia’s weekend of football finals. In the AFL decider the Richmond Tigers ended a 37-year premiership drought, and in the NRL the winds blew favourably for the Melbourne Storm. While millions around the nation picked a side and spent the best part of the long weekend cheering either way – Angie and Yvie, and Wayne and Tom could think of a few better things to watch.

Who pays on the first date?

While most of the dates on Channel 7’s First Dates don’t ever seem to go beyond the first date – the show brought to light a longstanding, make or break dating dispute: who pays? One couple on the show decide to ‘go Dutch’ and split the bill, which Matty, Sarah Marie and Jad feel isn’t the best first date approach. At The Dalton’s home, Kate feels it should always be equal.

Extreme waterslides

Meanwhile, in Channel 7’s new entertainment adventure show Cannonball – teams of two are catapulted into a lake from various towering slides. Most of the contestants are wearing budgie smugglers, and there’s a dramatic countdown for each flight and plunge. The ruling from Adam and Symon is that guys with tats seem to typically come out on top in this version of extreme water-sliding.

The Goggleboxers also tuned into Love it or List it Australia to witness The Block judge Neale Whitaker show off his own interior design flair.

Gogglebox season 6 is on Lifestyle on Wednesdays at 7.30pm.
