The quick-witted grandmother is being missed on screen - but she's making the most of isolation!
Gogglebox fans around the country were heartbroken when 91-year-old Emmie Silbery had to take a break from filming due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Although Emmie agrees that she "misses Gogglebox" and watching TV alongside granddaughter Isabelle and daughter Kerry, she reveals exactly how she's coping in isolation, and you can bet your life savings she's doing it with a gin and tonic in hand!
How have you been feeling lately?
I’m now in week five of isolation and I’m happy and relaxed. Kerry is looking after me, organising everything I need, cooking delicious meals and making sure that I’m not exposed to any chance of getting the virus (she makes sure that we are always 1.5 metres apart).
How are you coping with isolation?
I’m missing everyone, I looked over my balcony today and waved to my neighbours. I especially miss doing Gogglebox but being in complete isolation is the safest thing for me, given my age and vulnerability.
I’ve lived through the depression and the war, sitting on the couch watching TV endlessly is not a big deal.
What has been the hardest thing about isolation?
Missing my great grandson and everyone who is close to me. I would usually see Isabelle every day and that’s been hard but we call each other a lot.
How did you celebrate your 91st birthday?
I got a beautiful bunch of flowers from Gogglebox, Kerry gave me the latest book about Truganini and a set of daily brain games.
My great grandson gave me a lovely hand painted box of collected baby pine cones with a card that says “Have a great time GG”. I poured myself a G&T and listened to my favourite classical music.
What have you been doing to pass the time?
Reading, listening to music, watching World Movies on SBS with my G&T. I cleaned out the fridge today!
Has it been hard not being with your family?
Terrible! But I live with Kerry so she’s company, Isabelle and I FaceTime every day.
What do you hope everyone will learn from this time?
This crisis has and will continue to change Australia forever (I hope in a good way) and we should make the most of every opportunity to be together, care for and love each other and make sure that we keep doing that as a community when this is over.
Sometimes I take for granted that I can just go outside and am fit and well so I hope people stop and appreciate what they do have during this time.
We really are just one big family. We’re all in this together!
What will be the first thing you’ll do when this is over?
Hug and kiss my family and everyone else I come across! So, watch out everyone!
We can't wait to see Emmie back on Gogglebox again soon!
