I’m big on sustainable gardening – so when I created this design for a private client, I had to include a few eco-friendly features.
Rainwater tanks are a must, but they’re not particularly attractive. I hid this client's water tanks beneath the garden: 50,000 litres of water buried underneath the lawn.
It’s not as simple as just digging a hole and sticking them in. You’ll need to consult with a hydraulic engineer and council, so check with them first before you get started.
Fresh vegetables are something you can grow really easily at home. In this garden, I’ve gone for raised beds to aid in the drainage and help with harvesting and I’ve used recycled sleepers to continue the sustainable theme.
As the homeowner is a novice gardener, I’ve mass-planted leafy greens. They all require the same water and feeding, so they’re really easy to care for.
This garden also features a hen house. I’ve put in citrus trees to shade the chickens, and the chicken manure will help to organically fertilise the trees perfectly.
I hope this beautiful private garden has given you some inspiration for your own personal exterior spaces.
