Sovereign Hill offers a unique insight into life in an 1850’s gold mining town, as it re-creates Ballarat’s first ten years after the discovery of gold in 1851 when thousands of international adventurers rushed to the Australian goldfields in search of fortune!
Sovereign Hill is a living museum with working exhibits brought to life by costumed characters and over 40 horses. Set on 25 acres of an original mining site, Sovereign Hill is a goldfields town with shops, hotels, a theatre, schools, factories, a gold diggings and underground mines to explore.
By day, Sovereign Hill is where Australia’s history comes to life! It’s just like stepping back in time - from the hustle and bustle of Main Street where costumed ladies and gents parade their new-found wealth, to the excitement of the Red Hill Gully Diggings where you can pan for real gold and it’s yours to keep!
By night, Sovereign Hill presents its spectacular, multi-million dollar sound- and-light show, ‘Blood on the Southern Cross’, the dramatic story of the 1854 Eureka Uprising.
Families can also experience guided mine tours, lolly making demonstrations, can catch a horse-drawn coach, see steam-driven machinery in action, try bowling, and shop 1850s style in the array of colourful shops.
Sovereign Hill is an easy 90-minute drive from Melbourne, and there is ample free and unlimited parking on-site.
We had such a great time at Sovereign Hill with our three young grandchildren. And we're so glad we stayed overnight at the nearby holiday park to take advantage of "two days for the price of one". There's so much to do and see and so much energy expended, that spreading it all over a couple of days is the way to go - especially with smaller children. (And we can go back again within 12 months with our Gold Pass!)
I really applaud the staff at Sovereign Hill. They are so professional, enthusiastic, good humoured and helpful and carry out their duties in character with excellence. We found all the demonstrations and mine tours to be just the right length and with the right amount of information to keep even our small visitors very engaged. The children could have panned for gold all day (our smallest grandson was so enthusiastic that he finally fell in) and once the correct method was demonstrated by a passing miner, we all found lots of little flecks of gold.
This is a highly recommended, fantastic place to visit and we thankyou so much for the opportunity to do so.
