Where can your tax return take you this year?

If you're set to score a tax refund, here are the best destinations to cure your wanderlust.

With an offset of up to $1080 set to be applied to income earners across the country, it's more motivating than ever to complete your tax return.

According to ASIC, last year's average tax refund was $2,574. If you're nowhere near this number usually, this new rule may mean you're about to score a four-figure sum, which we think could be put to very good use - an overseas holiday!

To understand where exactly you can go with your return, Skyscanner Travel Expert, Emily Cairns reveals the amazing destinations where your tax return can literally take you:

Returns of less than $500

"Don’t be disheartened by this figure – you’d be surprised what kind of return flights you can score and they’re not all domestic, either!

"For less than $500 you can visit Singapore for $497 return per person through Skyscanner and immerse yourself in the vibrant and lively culture. Don’t miss the hawker markets serving delicious laksas and char kway teo daily or why not be adventurous and try the salted egg yolk fish skin? Yes, it’s a (delicious) thing! For holidays closer to home, you can fly to Auckland for $434 return per person to experience the magnificent landscapes New Zealand is renowned for. Discover the city or rent a car and take a scenic road trip along the coast.

"Tropical holidays are always are favourite and with flights to Bali for only $282 return per person, you’d be silly to pass this opportunity. Forget the tourist hotspots, instead reconnect with nature and go hiking or enjoy a relaxing sun-soaked getaway."

Returns of $500 to $1000

"Popular destinations are at your fingertips if you receive a tax return in this bracket. Starting with Hawaii at $886 return per person, you’ll get to fully relax and unwind with the friendly locals thanks to the tax man. Prefer enjoying a sun-soaked destination closer to home instead? Book flights to Fiji for $682 return per person.

"City-dwellers who love the hustle and bustle of an urban metropolis can find solace in a return trip to Tokyo for $819 per person. Once you’ve absorbed the bright neon lights and crossed the iconic Shibuya, hop on the bullet train and discover a new city in under a few hours. For a little less, visit Beijing for $704 return per person and discover China’s booming capital.

"Once you’ve recovered from your climb of the Great Wall of China, take a detour and visit the locals in the city’s many prefectures that preserve the ancient architecture so well. Further south from China in Ho Chi Minh City you’ll be enticed by the aromatic scent of beef noodle soup in the morning with return flights as cheap as $565 return per person."

Returns of $1000 to $2000

"Make your tax-return worth your while and pick a holiday destination from any continent in the world – Europe? North America? What about South America? For just $1,883 return per person to Vancouver you can be surrounded by the snowcapped mountains or show-stopping city.

"Off the southeast coast of Africa, escape to the cultural melting pot of Mauritius with return flights from only $1,724 return per person. If South America sounds more up your alley, fly to Buenos Aires for $1,675 return or to Santiago from $1,449 return to immerse yourself in the neighbouring cities.

Great news if you’ve received $1,500 back from the tax man. You can fly to popular European hubs such as London at $1,525 or Paris at $1,141 return per person and eat your way around Europe one freshly baked baguette or buttery croissant at a time."

Returns of $2000+

"Loved by travellers for its picturesque town and popular beaches, you can fly to Mykonos for $2,344 return per person and devour authentic Greek cuisine daily or bathe under the Mediterranean sun with unrivalled views of the Aegean Sea. For a little less, you can head over to Cairo for $2,170 return per person and tick the pyramids off your bucket list. Stroll around Cairo’s old town where you will find some of the world’s oldest churches and places of worship.

"Walking not your forte? Fly to Copenhagen for $2,071 return per person and explore the city by bike.
