10 ways to make the most of your LAX layover

Since La-La land is the gateway to the USA for 60 per cent of Aussie travellers, it makes sense to make the most of your layover before going on to explore further afield.

Even if you get a bit nervous leaving the airport when you have a connecting flight, these fun activities are much better than sitting in the terminal and are all within a 20-minute drive of LAX.

From bike riding along Venice Beach to playing a quick round of golf, the options are endless.

Venice Beach

Take a stroll along the iconic promenade and hire a bike while you explore the quirky neighbourhood.

Shopping at Abbott Kinney

If you’re tired of shopping in the airport, duck out on a shopping excursion to Abbott Kinney. Here, you’ll find a mix of designer fashion and old-school vintage shopping options.

Indulge at In-N-Out

California's all-time favourite burger joint In-N-Out, which is on most Aussie's bucket-list when visiting the City of Angels, is a must-do. Don’t forget there’s a whole other secret menu where you have to specifically ask for each item. Marina Del Rey

This is L.A.’s largest man-made harbour so get some fresh air with a walk around the marina. If you want to get a bit more adventurous, you can also take a paddle boarding lesson.

Flight Path Museum and Learning Centre

For anyone keen on aviation and it’s history, this museum, located inside the LAX Imperial Terminal, showcases scaled models of various aircrafts.

Chow down at Plant Food and Wine

Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area

This is one of L.A.’s best hidden gems. The family-friendly recreation area offers hiking trails and plenty of scenic views.

Manhattan Beach Pier

Soak up the Californian sun and take a stroll along the pier to get a breathtaking view of the ocean or cruise along the coastal path with a rented cruiser bike.

Westchester Golf range

After sitting for hours you might want to get out on the green and stretch your legs. This 18-hole, par-64 golf course and driving range is open daily until 10pm – perfect for travellers no matter what time your connecting flight is.

Hermosa Beach

The Hermosa Beach Pier and Pier Avenue are also home to many restaurants, bars and shops. This spot is also a great people-watching post as many locals bike ride and rollerblade past.
