Travel like a local: The rise of authentic holiday experiences

Living like a local has become the must-do holiday experience for many tourists.

It seems a luxury hotel and delicious food isn't enough for a fulfilling vacation any more.

These days, people want authentic, personal and local experiences while overseas that truly enrich their lives well beyond the duration of the trip.

Industry giants like Airbnb have been promoting the 'live like a local' mantra, and now there's a new service getting in on the action.

Tripfuser allows travellers to create hand-crafted trips, curated specifically to their taste by local experts on the ground.

Matt Beard founded Tripfuser to give travellers the option of planning their trip directly with locals and break free of tourist traps.

He noticed there were few options for people who wanted to book a full experience itinerary but without joining a pre-arranged group trip.

"Imagine you see a destination you’re dying to visit. You start researching online and are confronted by hundreds of travel options," Matt said.

"The excitement begins to fade. Which foodie tour is best? How can I get off the beaten track? It becomes overwhelming.

"Tripfuser pairs you with a local at the destination who brings it to life to deliver the trip plan of your dreams."

Travellers design their own experience on Tripfuser by creating a wishlist, or searching sample trips. Pre-vetted local experts then design a bookable trip - whatever your budget.

Backpacker favourites Nepal and Vietnam are already available on the platform, with Cambodia, Thailand and more destinations to launch in the coming months.

This growing trend for enlisting the help of local experts is a step in the right direction for sustainable tourism.

And with many popular destinations struggling with the influx of foreign visitors, we're likely to see more emphasis on life-changing local experiences in the next few years.
