7 things you didn’t know you could buy from your hotel room

While you have to return the keys, it seems almost everything else in your hotel room is for sale… you just have to ask.

Have you ever stayed in a plush hotel room and wished your own home was as luxurious? Turns out you can enjoy a permanent souvenir of your stay, with some high-end hotels allowing guests to purchase everything from the fluffy robe to the mattress they sleep on. Regional Vice President and General Manager of the Four Seasons Sydney, Bahram Sepahi, highlights some of the little-known items for sale, and why his chain offers them to guests.

Towels

One of the best things about a staycation in a swanky hotel has got to be the soft, fluffy towels in each room - and the sheer abundance of them on offer. If you’ve ever felt like you wanted to take them home, the good news is that you can, for a price. “When people come to learn they can purchase a set to take away with them or have sent to their home, they’re thrilled,” says Bahram. This includes all of the sizes, from the face washers and hand towels to the extra-large bath sheets.

Bathroom mat and robes

You can wrap yourself in a snug bathrobe or use a fluffy bathroom mat underfoot for a long time to come after your hotel stay. “We aim to create the element of luxury in our rooms, and part of this is done with the towels and robes that you get in that environment,” explains Bahram, “These items are for purchase at all our hotels, so we make sure the same luxurious experience is uniform worldwide.”

Mattresses and pillows

If you’ve ever slept like a baby in a hotel, but can never get the same level of comfort or rest at home, why not purchase the bed or pillow from your stay? “We get these requests from time to time,” says Bahram. “I wouldn’t say we get them every day, but we do get compliments almost daily from guests about the quality of their sleep and the fact they love to sink into a warm and cosy bed.” So if you wanted to purchase a large item such as a bed, how could it work? Bahram explains: “The staff are at the ready to oblige. We see a lot of people who come for a staycation from the same city saying they loved their sleep and would like to purchase the bed, but we have the capability to ship a bed anywhere in Australia or around the world, should you be living internationally."

Sheets and mattress protectors

“There’s a custom element to our beds, so if you’re buying a bed, chances are you’ll take the custom bedding as well,” says Bahram. “The high thread count, and quality of our sheets is what drives people to want to have that element of linen at home.” Hotel beds can be a custom size, but bed linen is also sold in standard sizing, so you can easily check out with a new sheet set for your bed at home, should you wish.

Complimentary items to ask for

If you need a specific item at a pinch, the concierge desk should be your first port of call. “We aim to help guests feel more at ease when they’re travelling, and housekeeping teams are hopeful guests can communicate with something they might need,” says Bahram.
