The friendliest places in Australia according to tourists

Australia's friendliest locals aren't where you thought they were.

The nicest folk in Australia are far from our major cities, a new report by AirBnb revealed.

The online travel platform for both hosts and guests, compiled a list of the most hospitable destinations in its 2018 Hospitality Index.

To be considered, the destination must have received over 1000 visitors in the past year. The top 10 were based on the destinations with the most five star reviews.

Topping the list was Queensland's Tamborine Mountain, a town where the population just scrapes over 1000, an hour north-west of the Gold Coast. The rainforest location is a nature-lovers dream, packed with exciting hikes, glow worm caves, and delicious local food and wine.

The remaining top 10 destinations were mostly in regional NSW and included popular getaway spots like Berry, Kangaroo Valley and Bowral.

Australia's smaller state capitals were preferred when it came to major cities, with Hobart leading the charge.
