Motorbiking Vietnam Takes you off the Beaten Track

A motorbike trip through Vietnam takes adventurous tourists off the beaten track.

Especially in Northern Vietnam, a motorbike trip into the mountains will reward those courageous enough to give it a go with stunning views of the dense jungles and rivers that flow throughout.

Here are four tips to consider when renting a motorbike:

Do some research

Start by checking TripAdvisor to see which motorbike operators received the best reviews. Chat to other tourists about motorbiking and see what they know. Make sure you choose a company with a good reputation for reliable and well-maintained bikes. Doing so will help prevent you from getting stranded, or spending too much time and money at repair shops.

Use a GPS

Many of Vietnam's roads are barely marked, and there are numerous turn-offs that may look tempting. Is it a shortcut, or a road to nowhere? A GPS can point you in the right direction by telling you exactly where you are at any given moment.

Pack lightly and waterproof your gear

Believe it or not you don't need much. Take only the bare essentials. You definitely need a basic tyre repair kit, a high quality rain jacket, rain pants and waterproofing for your backpack. Take comfortable clothes and plenty of layers - you will be doing a lot of sitting, and the mountain tops like Fansipan, Vietnam's highest peak, can be pretty brisk in the morning.

Take your time

Make a general plan of the cities you plan to hit, but don't rush from point A to point B. A popular destination among bikers, Sapa, makes for a beautiful stop off and you'll want to spend time exploring your surroundings. There are various treks into remote villages and parks in Northern Vietnam that are well worth participating in. Other travellers are always full of suggestions - you want to be able to adapt your itinerary to include something you hadn't thought of.
