Planning a holiday with three generations in mind? Look no further than fabulous Fiji.
These days, the classic Aussie family holiday has undergone somewhat of a revolution. While taking trips in the car up or down the coast are still very much a go-zone, more families are getting adventurous and travelling with their children and extended family members to overseas destinations.
While Fiji has long been enjoyed by family travellers, it's not often than one property works for the needs of all generations. The newly-refurbished Shangri-la Fijian Resort, however, does a great job of offering something for everyone.
If the words 'private island' don't fill you with excitement, they should! While most resorts are located around the popular Denarau area, The Shangri-la Fijian Resort is further south, on the private Yanuca Island located on the Coral Coast. There's a serenity to Yanuca Island, as you really get the sense you're miles away from the bustling town centres or other busy resorts as you make the hour-long journey south from Nadi airport.
Embracing the serenity
If you're keen to get away from your older children, or you've got grandparents along for the ride, the adults-only section of the resort gives the Shangri-la Fijian Resort an edge over the other big resort players. The Reef Wing is considered a resort-within-a-resort, and if you book a room there you can expect to enjoy exclusive access to ocean-front rooms and bures, a designated private breakfast area sans-kids, your very own infinity pool overlooking the ocean to share with your other adult guests and a lounge and nightly cocktail hour featuring tasty canapes and delicious drinks.
If you're keen to keep those good vibes going, the spa is a must-visit. Relax with a soothing or traditional Fijian Bobo massage, enjoy a pedicure or mani or treat your visage to a facial at CHI, The Spa. It offers four waterfront and two rainforest bures for treatments, and the only overnight treatment experience in Fiji. So luxe!
For those who fancy a few drinks and some dancing, the Black Marlin Bar just a short walk from all of the accommodation is the ideal place to have a boogie, toast to your holiday or experiment with new tastes, thanks to the 100-plus types of rum on offer.
Family friendly activities
Yes, it's important for mum, dad, grandma and grandpa to have a good time... but what about the kids? The Shangri-la Fijian Resort offers the same kid-friendly facilities as other resorts, so there's plenty of activities and family fun to be had. In addition to the three family pools, there's an inflatable water park, kids' club, canoeing, SUPing, snorkelling, tennis courts, games room, a kids disco, volleyball, a marine education centre and even putt putt mini golf.
But, if you're keen to explore offsite, just a five-minute drive down the road is EcoTrax, the fastest-growing attraction in Fiji. It's a three-hour adventure, riding the world's only rail-mounted electric assisted pushbike carriages on disused rail tracks. Buckle up and - along with a guide - pedal your way along the coast and through the villages to a beautiful secluded beach, where you'll get to enjoy a swim and fresh fruit, before returning back to base. An incredible experience!
Something that the Shangri-la knows well is that food equals happiness for a lot of families. Dining options are aplenty in the resort, which means you don't need to think about exploring any further.
An Asian fusion restaurant perched above the reef called Takali Asian Kitchen has Malaysian, Thai, Cantonese and Chinese dishes is a great option for a tasty family meal, or if you have fussy kids or want to appeal to a wide range of tastebuds, the Beach Bar and Grill is best for seafood and seasonal fare.
For a romantic night out away from the children, Golden Cowrie Coastal Italian is adults-only and led by Italian Sous Chef Bruno Bettinazzi, who hand-makes the soft cheeses and pasta that make this dining experience one to remember.
