When it comes to taking a holiday, do you prefer taking several short domestic breaks or a long overseas trip? How do you save for your getaway? And decide on your holiday destination?
A new survey into Australia’s holiday habits has revealed several interesting trends.
Staycation or Head Overseas?
Domestic breaks are now marginally more popular than overseas travel, with Aussies preferring a number of weekend 'staycations' throughout the year versus one big overseas trip.
Scrimp and Save
The poll, by holiday rental website Stayz.com.au, also found almost three quarters of holidaymakers (72%) squirreled away money for their trip in a dedicated ‘holiday fund’ at the expense of everyday costs.
Those polled said birthday presents for friends and family (49%), along with new furniture (45%) were the first to get the cut.
Two thirds planned to keep the purse strings tight, expecting to spend less than $1000 all up on a domestic break, while most expected to shell out a minimum of $2000 if leaving the country.
Yet even after all the scrimping and saving, 60% wished they had not spent so much on shopping and almost half thought they should have cut costs when eating out.
Where To Go Next?
When it came to planning where to go, three quarters of travellers wanted to visit somewhere new.
Destination choice was largely determined by travel offers available, with 77% saying they were now easily influenced by sales and special deals at the time of booking.
