The world’s most underrated travel attractions

Instead of following the hordes of tourists gathering around the Taj Mahal or jostling around the Eiffel Tower, why not check out some of the lesser known, but just as awe-inspiring, attractions?

Meghan Verbeek, Destination Manager from Peregrine Adventures, reveals the most underrated travel attractions around the world.

Destination: Northern India
Popular attraction: Taj Mahal
Hidden Gem: Ladakh

While the Taj Mahal stands graciously on the banks of River Yamuna, if adventure is what you’re after - visit Ladakh.

“Carefully hidden in the Indian Himalayas, this site resonates a truly picturesque but magical feel,” Meghan says. “It’s remoteness and barren mountain walls unfold into a unique culture filled with Buddhist monasteries and breathtaking adventure spots.”

Destination: China
Popular Attraction: Shanghai
Hidden Gem: Yunnan Yuanyang - Rice terraces

Shanghai is often the first port of call when travelling to China, however if you want to get away from the bright city lights, Yunnan is the place to go for rich natural landscapes.

“Yuanyang rice terraces are a visual spectacle and a true testament to the architectural efforts of the labouring Hani people,” Meghan explains.

Destination: Vietnam
Popular Attraction: Ha Long Bay
Hidden Gem: Mount Lao Than

While Ha Long Bay is undoubtedly a natural wonder of emerald water and towering limestone cliffs, a lesser known spectacle is Mount Lao Than.

Meghan reveals that the hiking track only opened in 2015, so there’s boundless untouched wilderness to be explored.

Destination: France
Popular Attraction: Eiffel Tower
Hidden Gem: Puy de Dome

You can’t go to Paris and not visit the Eiffel Tower, but you should also put Puy de Dome on your bucket list, too.

“It’s one of the youngest volcanoes in Europe surrounded by blissful landscapes, traditional French villages and crystal clear lakes making it an exceptional paragliding spot.” Meghan says.

While you may not have heard of it, Meghan reveals it’s a truly hidden gem.

Destination: Indonesia
Popular Attraction: Uluwatu Temple
Hidden Gem: Nusa Lembongan

When Aussies make the trip to Bali, they’ll likely visit the cliff-top Uluwatu Temple – often to see the mischievous monkeys just as much to take in the temple’s beauty and spirituality. However, if a cultural experience off-the-beaten-track is more your style, Nusa Lembongan plays host to an underwater Buddha.

“You won’t be disappointed as you’ll get a once in a lifetime opportunity to snorkel with a statue of Buddha centred around numerous stupas,” Meghan says.
