Swap the well-trodden tourist track for a few offbeat American travel destinations.
There's no doubt there are the same US hotspots on the top of everyone's list: strolling down Hollywood Boulevarde in Los Angeles, rolling the dice in Las Vegas, and taking in the New York skyline. But there are also remarkable lesser known destinations you should seek.
We asked Topdeck Travel, to share some of the top places you need to add to your next North American itinerary with some underrated stops along the way.
1. Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is a must stop for a true Southern Belle experience. The oldest city of Georgia oozes romance, culture and entertainment, with 18th Century buildings and wistful tree-lined streets draped with Spanish moss. You can even have your very own “life is like a box of chocolates” moment right on the park bench where Forest Gump sat waiting for his bus!
2. Nashville, Texas
There is live music to be heard 24/7 in Nashville, from the up-and-coming writers at the Bluebird Café to music legends rocking it out at the Grand Ole Opry, you never quite know who you will run into in Nashville. This stop is a must for music lovers.
3. New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans knows how to show you a good time. Dance in the streets of the French Quarter, or eat your weight in beignets (deep-fried pastry, anyone?). No matter what time of year the city always has the Mardi Gras spirit, so let the good times roll.
4. San Francisco, California
A popular go-see, there’s no doubt San Francisco is a definite must-do! From visiting one of America’s most infamous prisons Alcatraz to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, San Fran has something for everyone. It even boasts some of the best clubs on the West Coast so be sure to save some energy for a night you won’t forget.
5. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
There’s never a dull moment among these mountains! There are thrill-seeking activities a-plenty, with bobsledding at Jackson Hole a tourist favourite. You could be sitting atop a volcano in Yellowstone National Park one minute and then jetting across Lake Jenny to hike up Cascade Canyon the next. The options are endless in Wyoming, be sure to put this one on your bucket list!
6. Miami, Florida
In Miami, the day begins when the sun goes down. You could venture to Little Havana to work on your salsa and eat the best Cuban sandwich you’ll ever try, hands-down! Or, you could hit up one of the many South Beach clubs… But be warned, its nightlife never sleeps.
7. Grand Canyon
This one is well known to tourists, but still nothing can prepare you for the sheer size of these jaw-dropping two billion-year-old rock formations. With this spot firmly cemented as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it’s no wonder people are speechless in admiration of the Canyon. Then just a few hours down Route 66 and you’ll find yourself along to infamous strip of Las Vegas… roulette anyone?
