3 Reasons to Take a Staycation this Summer

Stay at home for this year's holiday and reap the financial benefits - plus learn more about your own city.

Australians are among the top travel spenders in the world, with a recent Visa study showing the average spend on our most recent trips was $4118 - and that's in US currency!

Whether you're trying to tighten your purse strings in the wake of the silly season splurge or are simply considering alternative holiday ideas this year, why not take a staycation? You don't have to travel anywhere - simply stay at home and explore your own backyard!

If you're not convinced, here are three reasons why you should consider vacationing in your own city.

1.  Work on your hobbies

A staycation gives you the perfect opportunity to finally bring those interior decorating ideas to life, or take up that sport you've been meaning to try out. Dedicating a chunk of time in your own home to yourself is a fantastic way to do exactly what you've been wanting to do, but have been putting off all year.

Even if all you want to do is lie around with a book and a glass of wine, a staycation allows you to do that without the guilt factor you often get when you're in a foreign city or country.

2. Save money

This is the obvious one - a staycation eliminates travel and accommodation costs, allowing you to either save that money or spend it on luxurious food and leisure activities in your neighbourhood. Put it towards an overseas trip in the future, save it for your upcoming nuptials or treat yourself to a shopping spree!

3. Explore your city

If you ever feel like tourists see more of your city's attractions than you do as a resident, now is the chance to look at it with a fresh pair of eyes. Visit museums, scenic hotspots and eat at the hippest restaurants in town - you're bound to fall in love with your neighbourhood all over again.
