You can also keep costs down by carefully choosing the dates you book and travel.
When should I travel?
Friday is the most popular day to travel - and it is generally the most expensive too, with travellers looking to maximise their trip with a weekend at their destination.
You can get a cheaper fare by picking a different travel day, generally midweek.
Additionally, the summer holiday period during December and January is when travel hits a peak, meaning you'll pay more during these months.
How far in advance should book?
When you book affects how much you pay and the best time to book depends on where you are going.
One to three months before departure is the cheapest time to book domestic, Trans-Tasman and Asia Pacific flights, with three to six months the best for longer haul destinations.
Generally, the closer to departure date you search and book, the more expensive the fare becomes, particularly less than one week out.
But beware of booking too early - more than six months before departure is actually more expensive.
The day of the week you choose to search on doesn’t affect the price, with fares varying less than 1 per cent.
