Winter Skin Preparation Tips

Winter is the ideal time to ensure the skin is nourished and protected, keeping it soft and silky-smooth in preparation for spring. Philips LUMEA beauty expert Amy Erbacher has some tips on caring for the skin during winter, including maintaining smooth, hair-free skin.


During winter, we tend to have hot showers and baths that dry out the skin and our natural oils. There are two great ways to combat this. Firstly, when you bathe, make sure the water is tepid, rather than hot. This will minimise the skin-drying impact of the water.

Secondly, in order to prevent dry and scaly skin, it’s important to exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and to allow moisturisers to penetrate deeper. You can use a chemical exfoliation (enzyme) treatment, or a mechanical exfoliation (granular) treatment.

Granular exfoliants consist of little spheres that you can feel on your skin. These feel quite gritty and are great are removing dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliants are made up of fruit enzymes and are active treatments. Rather than experiencing a grainy feeling on your skin, you’re likely to simply experience a slight tingle. It works by eating away at the dead skin cells and unlike a scrub, it’s safe to use on fragile capillaries and sensitive skin.

A trick is to keep exfoliating gloves and mitts, and a good-quality exfoliating scrub, in the shower so that they’re handy any time.

2. Dry body brushing

Dry body brushing is a quick and easy way to buff away dead skin cells and stimulate circulation. This two-minute treatment has the added benefits of boosting the lymphatic system and helps to eliminate stored toxins that lead to cellulite.

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

I can’t emphasise enough the importance of keeping the skin hydrated. Drink as much water and organic herbal teas to keep hydrated and flush toxins out of the skin and body. Apply nourishing moisturising creams and body oils to keep skin silky smooth.

Look out for hydrating ingredients such as Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil or Manuka Honey.

4. Indulge in a massage

Massages have various healing properties, and are not only a way to get a proper dose of rest and relaxation but also great for improving circulation and detoxifying the body. Regular massages will be very beneficial but even one as a test will leave you feeling rejuvenated.
