Follow this advice from our style expert Donny Galella for all your winter wardrobe must-haves.
The autumn leaves are falling, it’s getting harder to roll out of bed in the morning and that frosty morning chill is a timely reminder to update our wardrobe with some new winter warmers.
This season consider investing in a statement coat in a bold shade, dramatic print or with glamorous details. We gravitate towards darker colours in the cooler months, so don’t hesitate to brighten up the day by wearing a coat in an inspiring and cheery colour. Consider mustard, tangerine, fuchsia, cobalt blue or cherry red.
Other key trends this season include animal prints, camel tones and coats finished with intricate details, such as embellishment, flirty ruffles, leather trims, a belted waist or a gorgeous oversized funnel collar. Military style coats with precision tailoring and metallic buttons will ensure you salute style. Faux fur coats or aviator style jackets with shearling lined collars will provide some neck warmth. To maximise your dollar and give you added versatility, look for styles with a removable fur collar.
Kate Middleton was recently snapped wearing a white Burberry trench coat, that particular style sold out within hours and has rekindled the love for a classic trench coat. A wardrobe essential, which is super versatile and extremely flattering on most shapes. Capes and cape style coats are also popular this season. To keep extra warm top off your look with wool based hat, beret or cute beanie and layer the look with a chunky knit scarf.
The number one styling trick for winter is to build up your layers of clothes (also known as layering). Don’t wear big, bulky shapeless coats, as this will just make you look like the ‘Michelin Man’. Start with a nice top or blouse, wear a thin jumper or cardigan over that and then wear a jacket or statement coat as your outer layer. For extra warmth add a scarf, a hat or maybe some knee length boots. Wearing tights and opaque stockings are a fabulous way to include an extra layer of warmth. Not only a fashionable look, but it will keep you extra toasty.

Other winter must haves:
• A Cape or Poncho Yes, the cape and poncho are back! Super cute and warm but not the most flattering style on the body. As this is a trend item, most likely to disappear by next winter. My tip would be to find an affordable cape from Forever New or Glassosns.
• A Chunky Knit Scarf A great way to keep warm and build your layers in winter, look for one in multi colours or a print, which will inject some colour into your wintery dark wardrobe. Pop into Portmans, Sportsgirl or Tierack.
• A Beret or Beanie Keep your head warm and top off your look with headwear. Look for wool blends or cost knitted options. Target has a wide range of cute yet super affordable options.
• A Pair of Black Wool Pants Black pants are a wardrobe essential, a wool blend fabric will keep your pins extra warm. Try Jigsaw, David Lawrence or Marcs.
• A Cardigan is a great way to build up your layers in the cooler months. Layer a cardigan over a top, add a statement coat and scarf.
Keep your toes warm with EMU Australia who has just released water resistant sheepskin to all of the sheepskin styles across their autumn winter collection. This advanced technology not only protects the boots from water; it reduces the risk of stains from the surface. The water repellent has been added through the tanning process rather than the standard sprays available that sit on the surface of the boot and wash away as the boot wears. EMU Australia use Grade A quality Australian Borderlester / Merino cross sheepskin, known for its blend of fine and thick pile fleece with a thick strong pelt.
