The hero skincare ingredient you need to know about

There's always some ingredient or another that we hear about that says it will do wonders for our skin, but this one could be a game-changer.

As technology advances, so does the level of beauty products we have at our fingertips. One of the stand out ingredients that has popped up on our radar is squalene.

What it is

Squalene? You may ask! The reason why this perhaps little known ingredient yields such great results is that our body produces its own version to give the skin natural moisture.

However, as we age, the amount of squalene we naturally produce decreases leading to dryness.

Ramya Viswanathan Senior Product Development Manager, Biossance reveals that because squalene is familiar, it easily abosrbs into your skin. "Our weightless Squalane ingredient instantly hydrates and locks in essential moisture, replenishing your skin with what it once had for a soft, smooth and healthy-looking glow," she explains.

Where does it come from?

Previously, squalene was available from shark liver, but Biossance's parent company Amryis Inc. developed a sugarcane-derived altermative, so you can reap the benefits while completely sustainable.

"Our squalane oil is derived from rapidly renewable sugarcane. This skin replenishing emollient was originally derived from shark liver, which has had a devastating impact on shark population," Ramya explains. "Squalane can also come from the byproducts of olive oil pressing, but quality can vary depending on the availability of the olive crops. Our sugarcane derived squalane has consistent quality, is the same molecularly as the other types of squalane and does not lead to any negative environmental impact or deforestation."

So, if you need a hydration boost, give squalene-based products a go!
