Get ready for the tear-jerker of the year.
The trailer for new documentary I Am Heath Ledger has been released on what would have been the beloved actor’s 38th birthday, nine years after his unexpected and tragic death.
The predictably gut-wrenching documentary, by filmmaker Derik Murray, will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23 before hitting theatres in early May.
The film offers a rare and intimate glimpse into Heath’s private life with never-before-seen footage. It will also feature interviews with his close family members and friends, and explore his impressive string of acting triumphs.
Musician Ben Harper, who features in the trailer, talked about Heath’s enthusiastic nature. “Heath was the most alive human. If it wasn’t on the edge, it didn’t interest him.”
Australian model, Christina Cauchi, who dated the actor for two years, reminisced Heath’s passion for filmmaking and documenting. “There were always cameras around. A video camera or a Polaroid camera or the film camera,” she recalled. “That’s the only way I think of him; with the camera in hand.”
Heath was only 28 when he suddenly passed away in January 2008 after a lethal mixture of prescription medication. The actor dated Michelle Williams after meeting on the set of Brokeback Mountain in 2004. The pair welcomed their only child, Matilda, a year later, but separated in 2007.
An Australian release date is yet to be confirmed, but it will undoubtedly make its way to our screens and break hearts all over again.
