Tried and Tested: 10 Beauty Products That Actually Work

Testing lipstick shades, hair masks, eye gels, cheek tints and body balms for a living is a tough gig (said no one ever!). After decades as a beauty editor, here are my top 10 picks for tried, tested and truly revolutionary beauty products I can't get enough of.

Want beauty products that promise results? Try these top 10 picks.

1. Terax Crema

This truly is the anti-ageing product for your tresses, delivering heaped hydration and taming frizz long-term. A favourite of Liv Tyler, Kate Beckinsale and Natalie Bassingthwaite – and little old me! – Terax Crema is perfect for applying to towel dried hair prior to styling, or left in overnight for a weekly treat. Hair, quite literally, becomes young again!

2. Grants Liquid Chlorophyll

Every beauty editor worth her exfoliating salts knows that good skin starts within. No matter how fancy the foundation or tricky the facial toner, they won't do any good if your skin is not healthy. I give my complexion – and body – some major TLC each morning with a swig of Chlorophyll which is easily absorbed into the body to promote cell renewal and deliver much needed amino acids, minerals, vitamins and important trace elements to every darn cell there is!

3. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant

This is my desert island product! Each morning I press it on lips to hydrate and across eyelids to add a killer gloss, its fabulous for chapped nail beds and sets fly-aways on up-do's too. Wayward eyebrows? No matter. Just sweep them upwards with a little of this on a brow brush and you’re quite literally good-to-go. Press a little into the high part of the cheekbones for instant illumination and if you’ve been unwittingly sun or wind burnt, pat the entire face with a thin layer of this magic stuff before bed and you’ll feel – and look – way more human in the morning!

4. La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Melt-in Cream, SPF 50+

I wish I could tell you I use this purely for its super sun protection factor, but that would be a lie. Although a massive, much-needed benefit for my skin health, what I really adore is the texture of this coverage, and the fact that it tonally melts into the skin, creating a dewy, barely there coverage. No need for heavy foundations whatsoever!

5. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

You may wonder what a water can do, well the answer is almost everything that a cream or lotion cannot. Basically, this contains 90 per cent Pitera – which is packed with vital vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids which – when combined – stimulate a natural surface rejuvenation process within the skin to boost vitality and health. So, by patting this onto the clean complexion each morning, you are locking down the goodness before your skincare is applied, and well before the day can take its toll.

6. Benefit Bene-Tint

Ah, to have the flushed, rosy complexion of youth again! Well, this delivers the closest thing. A super cherry-toned tinted lip and cheek stain, its natural sheerness makes for easy distribution and absorption to deliver a glossy and healthy appearance. Even when I am going sans cosmetics, I press this onto the lips lightly and pat onto the cheeks for an instantaneous lift.

7. L’Oreal Paris Brow Artist Plumper

Missed your visit to the brow salon? It happens to the best of us. And if you’re like me, above and beyond trying to nail the nicest shape, you’re also trying to max out less-than-full brows. This little product has changed my life. In a few upward strokes, it gives a full, flush look – a-la Cara Delevingne – and keeps brows full all day thanks to the gel texture. Go with the shade that best matches your natural root colour for optimal effect.

8. Dr Spiller Vitamin C Cream

I have super dry skin, and any moisture I have gets zapped as soon as I leave the house. Damn you environmental aggressors! So, basic chemistry dictates that by using an oil-based cream each day I can work in synergy with my own natural oils to retain hydration. You see, the skin is water-proof, so by using water-based creams you simply aren't getting as much absorption. Furthermore, water-based products traditionally contain more emulsifiers as well, which can actually be counterproductive and dehydrate on the skin.

9. Becca Luminiser

In addition to my sheer coverage, I do love a bit of a robust sun-kissed shimmer, so this crème-to-liquid formulation is perfect as it delivers warmth that can easily be applied to the cheekbones, brow bones and temples to deliver a hint of skin health. If you are after a little more of an amped-up bronze, then you can also mix one pump of this with your coverage for an all-over glow.

10. Revlon Gold Series Lash Curler

My great friend and L’Oreal Paris Makeup Artist, Elsa Morgan once told me that the best way to get lush lashes is not via mascara, but a curler. Of course I didn’t believe her, until she showed me how to heat  said curler. A revelation indeed. Simply by blasting the rubber area of the eyelash curler for ten seconds with your hairdryer, the warmth can have a semi-permanent effect on lifting and curling lashes prior to mascara, so that upon application, lashes are already full and open - and set to stay that way for longer!
