Top 11 Halloween Trends for 2015

Needing a bit of Halloween costume inspiration? Look no further than this year's headlines. Here are the top Halloween trends for 2015.

Tired of dressing up as 'sexy cat' for Halloween? If you're a pop culture fanatic, then the headlines have served up plenty of inspiration for your Halloween get up!

Here are our favourite trends for 2015.

1. Miley Cyrus

Last year nude body suits and giant hands were everywhere, but this year Miley wannabes have inspiration overload thanks to her 11 eyebrow raising outfits from the MTV VMAS. From space age, to flower power to the completely absurd, there’s something for almost everyone.

How to do it:

Grab your favourite high cut leotard and other random assortments from your wardrobe, maybe throw in some bizarre glasses, some dreadlocks and you’ll have the look nailed.

2. Minions

With these cheeky little rabble rousers taking over the big screen (and our hearts) once again, you can be sure to see a Minion costume or two - or a hundred - out causing mischief and painting the town yellow on Halloween.

3. Twinning

You and your bestie left your get up to the last minute? Take inspiration from one of the most popular emojis of 2015 and get twinning!

How to do it:

Matching black leotards, blonde bob wigs and black bows.

4. Rihanna at the Met Ball

Rihanna’s extravagant gown at the Met Gala certainly made an impression, but perhaps not the way she had hoped – within minutes of her arrival, the yellow dress had set the internet alight with comparisons to everything from omelettes to Big Bird. But the only thing you’ll have to worry about trick or treating in this costume, is people trodding on the train!

How to do it:

Find a sheet or blanket in the most obnoxious shade of yellow possible, and hope for a chilly night!

5. Avengers

Every year you’ll see Super Heroes haunting the streets at Halloween, but this is especially true when a new movie is released. Avengers: Age of Ultron has guaranteed costumes for Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, The Black Widow, and Loki will be available, so you can save the universe.

How to do it:

While there are DIY solutions for these, if you’ve left it to the last minute you might want to pop down to your nearest costume store and cross your fingers they haven’t already sold out.

6. Pineapples

With interior decorators, fashion designers and just about everyone else jumping on the pineapple trend, it could be said that we’ve reached peak pineapple! Join the club and pay homage to the fantastic fruit.

How to do it:

There are so many creative ways you can interpret this costume – anything yellow on the bottom and green and spiky on top should do the trick. Let your creativity fly! We love this take on the pineapple from StudioDIY, but don’t let that stop you from celebrating the funniest fruit.

7. Star Wars

The film may not be out yet, but even so, Star Wars is expected to be a monster trend and the force will certainly be with trick or treaters on Halloween night.

How to do it:

Any costume shop will have shelves filled with Luke Skywalkers, Yodas, Darth Vaders and light sabers galore, or if you prefer a DIY solution, get creative with black sheets and cardboard face masks.

8. Left Shark

The bumbling blue fish was the real star of Katy Perry’s Super Bowl XLIX performance that sent Twitter into meltdown!

How to do it:

You two can steal the spotlight on Halloween – find yourself a Shark Onesie and get the party started.

9. Group Costumes

Pinterest has officially declared group costumes as the all time biggest trend for Halloween – which is good news for anyone planning to trick or treat en masse. Think Mario, the feelings from Disney’s Inside out, Legos and Ninja Turtles…

How to do it:

We love this take of Taylor Swift’s ‘girl gang'; from Twitter user @Brit.

10. #thedress

Remember the heated debate around that dress last year? Whether you saw black and blue or white and gold, the dress totally divided the internet after it went viral. Revive the debate all over again by paying homage on Halloween.

How to do it:

Buy an old dress from an op shop, and go hell for leather with spray paint.

11. Gay Pride

When the US Supreme Court of America legalised gay marriage in all 50 states in June, they confirmed what we already knew to be true: love is love. People celebrated the monumental decision all over the world, so show your support for big love and paint yourself in rainbows!

How to do it:

Miley managed to pull this off with aplomb - get painting with all the colours of the rainbow and achieve the same look with a large piece of cardboard.
