Tina Arena was the queen of the ARIA awards last night. From her outstanding performance with The Veronicas and Jessica Mauboy, to her inspirational speech about women in the industry, she absolutely owned the night.
After being inducted into the Hall of Fame, she gave a truly inspiring acceptance speech that touched on ageism and took a swipe at the Aussie music industry.
“Ladies over 40 are still in the game. Keep doing what you’re doing, ladies, because we will decide when it is time for us to stop,” she said.
“I’m not trying to be rude, I’m just trying to make the most of it.”
Of commercial radio she said, “continue to support Australian music on the quality of the song and not the age of artist” and “don’t meet your Australian quotas because you have to. Exceed them because you want to.”
She went on to pay homage to her former home of France, but closed with her love of Australia.
“Thank you for not making me a celebrity but thank you for celebrating my work because that is where I am most comfortable,” she said.
Her performance and her acceptance speech was met with much praise from the music industry.
