The countdown to Christmas is on! From remakes of time-tested carols to jazz-charged classics to the top of the pops, here are the top Christmas tracks you need on your playlist.
Whether it’s being piped through a gargantuan shopping centre or on endless repeat at whatever Christmas themed party you go to, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a few fun carols.
You may have heard them enough times to tizzy your tinsel, but Christmas songs are unavoidable come December, so you may as well ditch the bah-humbuggery and throw yourself into the festive spirit with these top hits.
10. Little Drummer Boy’ – Lauryn Hill
Plenty have tried to deconstruct this haunting classic to make it their own, but the drummer boy has never played a funkier beat since Lauren Hill recorded this remake in 1999. Coupled with her smooth vocals and an RnB treatment, what was meant to be a one off recording for Rosie O’Donnell’s Christmas Series, has become a seasonal classic.
9. The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
The test of a great Christmas song is whether you get sick of it after half a dozen plays. Based solely on that, the soul-charged carol by Nat King Cole – which became one of the defining performances of his career – is sure to be piped through elevators in December forever more.
8. Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ – Jackson 5
Just about very pop contemporary who cashes in on the silly season has covered it, but its Jackson 5’s groovy rendition that really injects the Christmas fun into this classic. So catchy that even the greenest Grinch’s will find themselves singing along by the second verse.
7. White Christmas – Bing Crosby
The closest many of us get to a White Christmas Down Under is a tin of Grandma’s cherry and raisin stuffed chocolate, but why should that stop us from pretending? Whether your hanging the mistletoe, decorating the tree, or just dancing around your house throwing white confetti, there’s a good reason why this tune is the biggest selling single worldwide of all time – Bing Crosby’s hit will never fail to get you in the mood!
6. Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’ – John Lennon & Yoko Ono
John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1972 anti-Vietnam war anthem has since transcended to become a Christmas classic. Throw this into the playlist to remind your guests that Christmas is so much more than food comas and a greedy present grab.
5. Fairytale of New York - The Pogues
There are those songs we’re just guaranteed to hear repeated endlessly on the radio, and none more than Fairytale in New York. There’s even data to prove it. The 1987 song The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl topped the list of 50 top Christmas songs played since 2010 according to rights body PRS for Music.
Numbers aside, Shane MacGowan’s gravelly vocals are guaranteed to evoke romance and warm fuzzies.
4. It’s the most wonderful time of year - Andy Williams
Andy Williams’ triumphant classic serves up plenty of shlmaz and a swinging beat that just begs for bad dancing.
3. ‘Blue Christmas’ – Elvis Presley
The King’s bluesy swagger on this 1948 country hit has spawned a thousand covers, but nothing quite beats Elvis’ seductive voice backed by rhythmic instrumentals. The perfect after-party track when the eggnog’s been drunk dry and the last mince pie scoffed.
2. Last Christmas’ – Wham!
It’s been covered by everyone from Taylor Swift, Coldplay and Crazy Frog, but no one does the 1984 smash hit better than Wham. Extra candy canes awarded for some truly memorable knitwear.
1.All I Want For Christmas Is You’ – Mariah Carey
We dare you not to at the very least bob along to Mariah Carey’s 1994 smash hit. This song has everything; a hook that will earworm you for days, a good dose of cheesy soul and Mariah Carey frolicking about in the snow in a Santa suit. What’s not to love?
