The Most Talked About Topics of 2016

If you’ve been anywhere near the Internet over the past year, you may have double-tapped, tweeted about or followed one of these hot topics!

So what images and stories heated up our iPhones and crashed our computers most since January 1?

Lifestyle writer, Emma Bangay, has the low-down on social media's trending topics over the past year.

2016 on Twitter: Gotta catch 'em all!

In 2016 Australia, the hashtag was hot. From politics to PokemonGo, Twitter was a flurry with all the # topics. On the serious side, we were introduced to the ever-present, politically driven #auspol and #ausvotes. Further afield, it was all about #Brexit, and the US #ElectionNight for us Aussies.

But if politics weren’t your thing, there is a good chance #PokemonGo may have been? The addictive animation that topped the Australian Twitter entertainment sphere was followed by the #Oscars and #StarWars.

When it comes to the most followed Australians, the boys reigned supreme with celluloid stars surfacing in top spots. The 5 Seconds of Summer boys dominated with frontman Luke Hemmings (with 8.1 million followers) overtaking long-term leader Cody Simpson  as the most followed Aussie. His fellow band mates Michael Clifford and Calum Hood are also nipping at Cody’s heels at this very minute.

Rounding out the top five most followed is the feisty Iggy Azalea  (who’s following spiked +1.16 million). The always affable Hugh Jackman also sported impressive Twitter love, picking up another 1.05 million followers to secure his spot in the Top 10.

2016 on Lifestyle: What you loved...

Although she hasn’t revealed much online at all in recent months, it was Kim Kardashian’s nude selfie that topped the online hits at Lifestyle! this year! You also absolutely loved the refresher guide on the myths and facts surrounding sex (proving that you actually did have it on the brain this year after all!) Hopefully, you’re better off for this little read, right?

Tailing this tip-based tome was blogger Constance Hall’s real life revelation about ‘Parent Sex.' Constance's musings reached viral status several times over the past year, with media and fans picking up on her wit and tell-all attitude. In fact, Constance wrangled herself over a million Facebook followers!

From naval gazing to star gazing, at the number three spot for the most popular story was all about star signs. Our story, 'Which Star Sign is Most Likely to Cheat?’, reported on a recent study that found Sagittarians, Geminis or Aries were the least faithful... uh oh!

It was also very clear that you couldn't get enough of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in 2016, especially the news about his new bub, River Rocket. This adorable family clearly has a special place in your hearts, as does his recipe for Overnight Roasted Pork Shoulder

2016 on Instagram: All hail Selena

This year was certainly the year of Selena Gomez on Instagram! Yes, even despite a recent social media hiatus, the 24-year-old singer secured the lion's share of the top 10 most 'liked' Instagram posts, with the portrait of her clutching a personalised Coca-Cola bottle garnering 6 million likes to take out the top spot.

Her tour night snaps and swimsuit shots took second and third places consecutively before soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo stepped in at number six and nine with his Euro 2016 trophy shots. But again, Gomez rounded out her near perfect 10 with a snap of her performing which garnered 3.2 million likes.
