According to insiders, the pair had a rough relationship, but were close. Their relationship is well-documented in Carrie's novels, such as Postcards from the Edge and Wishful Drinking, which also tell the story of her drug abuse, mental illness and recovery.
Debbie once told PEOPLE about being by Carrie's side during her drug battle: “There have been a few times when I thought I was going to lose Carrie. I’ve had to walk through a lot of my tears. but she’s worth it."
Upon the death of Carrie at the age of 60, Debbie said on social media: “Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter. I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop.”
Today, media reports revealed that Debbie's last words before she died the day after her daughter were: "I want to be with Carrie".
Debbie leaves behind her son, Todd Fisher, and Carrie her daughter, Billie Lourd.
