The iconic Pirelli calendar, renowned for overtly sexualised content and nudity, has revealed a refreshing take on ‘baring all’ for its 2017 edition.
Shot by legendary German photographer Peter Lindbergh, the star-studded calendar embraces femininity by celebrating women who uphold a strong sense of prowess, power and vulnerability – without any tricky retouching.
Peter, who is effectively redefining ‘sexy’, explained at the international press launch that the 44th edition captures and rejoices personality, sensitivity and the guts to be yourself. His aim was to “capture sensitivity and emotion, laying bare the souls of the women in the images, rendering them more naked than a nude.”
Paying homage to the silver screen, Peter shot a string talented and reputable actresses including Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Uma Therman, Kate Winslet, Robin Wright, Julianne Moore and Helen Mirren, in conjunction with a number of fairly new faces like Alicia Vikander, Lea Seydoux and Rooney Mara.
The tasteful and elegant collection of black and white photographs echos the 2016 calendar, shot by Annie Leibovitz, and is a far cry from the calendar’s blatant sexism made infamous by its scantily-clad supermodels.
“I wanted to show women in a different way, Peter explained. “I did this by asking actresses who have always played an important role in my life and to try and get as close to them as possible through my photos. As an artist, I feel I have a responsibility to free women from the idea of eternal youth and perfection. Society's ideal of perfection is impossible to achieve.”
Breathtakingly raw and incredibly captivating, each woman exudes femininity and is clearly comfortable in front Peter’s lens. In the behind-the-scenes video, Chinese actress and model Zhang Ziyi described him as “a master”, while award-winning House of Cards actress Robin Wright labelled him as “one of the greatest photographers to capture women.”
Bravo, Peter and Pirelli, bravo.
