The 10 Commandments of Fake Tanning

The banning of solariums at the beginning of 2015 was a win for health, but it may have left some people feeling lost and (gasp!) pale. Follow these 10 commandments to achieve a flawless faux glow - without damaging your skin.

Aussie women (and men!) love that summer glow and in this day and age it's so easy to achieve it safely at home. It's time to ditch the tanning bed and opt for easy, healthy and affordable at-home tans that will deliver a summer glow all year round.

Self-confessed tan-a-holic, Samantha McMeekin, Health and Body Editor at beautyheaven shares her 10 top tips to ensure no one leaves the house orange, green or streaky!

#1 Thou shan’t shave

If you’re planning to tan, put down the razor and choose a longer-lasting type of hair removal. When you shave, you usually have to repeat the process a few days later, meaning you’ll get rid of hairs and strip away your fresh new tan.

#2 Thou shalt exfoliate

The key to even colour is a smooth surface, so the night before tanning, exfoliate your skin using a glove like the Manicare Exfoliating Glove.

#3 Thou shalt prevent build-up

Pop some body butter on dry areas like the elbows and knees. This will stop the tan from building up and becoming too dark in these spots. I like using Sunescape Hydrating Body Butter.

#4 Thou shalt use a tinted tan

If you can see exactly where you’re applying your tan, it will make the whole experience A LOT easier. Try St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, it applies quite dark, but don’t worry, the colour is simply to guide your application and you’ll still end up with the same golden results.

#5 Thou shalt use a mitt

You don’t want to be caught out orange-handed, so use a mitt to apply your tan. Its soft, foam-like texture will allow you to spread the tan more accurately and buff it into your skin to prevent streak marks. The TanOrganic Self Tan Applicator Glove is my favourite.

#6 Thou shan’t forget to lift arms

When you’re applying your tan, don't forget to lift up your arms to spread colour underneath, all the way to your underarms. It’s a common spot to miss and you may not realise until you go to stretch one day!

#7 Thou shalt remember the feet and hands

If you stop at your ankles and wrists, your tan will look obviously fake. To avoid making this faux pas, use the residue on the mitt to lightly go over the tops of your feet and back of your hands. This technique will blend the colour in nicely.

#8 Thou shan’t be afraid of face tan

Tanning your face will change your life. Think less make-up, a natural, healthy glow and no need to heap on the bronzer to try and match your body. Still not convinced? Watch my video tutorial and I promise you’ll never look back.

#9 Thou shalt not wear a bra

Don’t ruin all your hard work by putting on a bra before your tan has developed. This will only cause wear marks around your chest and shoulders. Instead, don a loose-fitting, dark-coloured dress or T-shirt until it’s time to shower.

#10 Thou shalt top up

To keep your tan flawless for as long as possible, top it up every 2-3 days with a tan extender or gradual tan like Bondi Sands Gradual Tanning Milk. This will also help it to slowly fade out, which is much better than ending up with patches all over the place.
