It's a brand spanking new season, and that means a few fresh additions to the wardrobe. But rather than undergoing a complete overhaul - and breaking the bank - here are the best pieces to work back with your winter wardrobe while the weather still allows.
A new season requires a whole new wardrobe, right? Forget the idea of having to plash wads of cash on a new set of clothes and accessories as the weather warms up. It can be as simple (and cost-effective) as working your trusty winter items with a few new key pieces. Here's how.
1. The Shoe
Gladiator sandals are big news in shoes. Either flat or high, you can work them back with a myriad of pieces from your winter wardrobe. If you are going for a flat sandal with high-laces – a la Kourtney Kardashian – opt for a pair of your favourite cut-off denim shorts or a shift dress paired back with a long-line cardigan that may already be in your closet. If you opt for a high heel gladiator, you’re sorted with a pair of your favourite jeans and shirt, like Kim Kardashian loves.
2. The Dress
Romance is not dead this spring with the long floaty dress proving an absolute winner as it flatters all shapes and sizes and really does evoke a timeless femininity. Go for prints or simple pastels, and add an edgy element with your winter ankle boots and leather biker jacket.
3. The Pant
This spring, sidestep the skinny leg, and go with the flow of the floaty wide-leg pant or jean. This silhouette does amazing things for creating a more statuesque appearance, and can easily work back with a closed-toe heel – before peep-toe season kicks in completely – and that longline knit you spent most of the last few months in!
4. The Skirt
Skirts are getting shorter, that’s for sure, but in spring, the fabrics can easily work back with tights, boots and even a knit when needed. Go for a suede A-line skirt – serendipitous of the 1970s – that can also compliment those gladiators that are ready to go when the sun decides to stay out.
5. The Top
Whether it’s long-sleeve or short, the off-the-shoulder style is making serious waves this spring. If you're feeling the chill on your shoulders, allow the décolletage detail to shine through by pairing this pretty top back with your favourite all-year-round denim jacket to create the perfect 'pretty-meets-gritty' look.
If you don’t want to invest in pieces, then be inventive! Here are 3 of the top trans-seasonal tips:
1. All Hail The Hat
Your floppy felt hat still has style legs in spring, but rather than working it back with a thick knit and a woolen coat, wear it with your flowing spring dress (as above) to add some Boho swagger to your step.
2. Wear More White
Let there be light in spring, by steering clear of darker shades like navy and black. Now is the time to dust off your favourite white top and pair it back with white trainers and denim. Or grab your white t-shirt and team it with your winter pencil skirt, bare legs and espadrilles. Anything white adds freshness to your wardrobe, even if it is a few seasons old!
3. Mix Your Prints
Tartan, floral, spots and stripes. Anything goes this spring, so grab a flannelette shirt left over from winter and co-ordinate it with a floral skirt for a fun spring statement. Stick to only two prints in clothing and one extra in accessories (Bag, scarf, shoes, sunnies etc). Keep the rest block colours so that the ensemble all makes perfect style sense.
