What inspired you to create your Lyloh business and range?
I ran away to Asia for 6 months. Loved it and wanted to continue travelling but a mortgage and the need for coin dragged me kicking and screaming back to work. While I was in asia I tried to find some nice stylish sarongs. I couldn’t find any so I made my own. I challenged myself to only wear a sarong for 60 days, this made me create different outfits to suit various occasions from dinner dates to riding a bicycle. From there I found a gap in the market for good quality stylish sarongs.
How are the sarongs created?
All of our sarongs are hand made. We use silk screen printing, hand batik and gradation dying. I spend a few weeks at our dye houses making samples and colours. Experimenting with different techniques. I always need a good manicure & scrub after!
Eco Lyloh is an inspiring process. We dye our 100% cotton jersey by extracting colours primarily from leaves & wood. I played with a few different techniques, from using an air brush over freshly picked coconut palm leaves (coco palm) , sea sponge stamping (coral garden) & painting the rainbow with elephant grass (rainbow). I try to keep it as natural as possible.
What are your top tips for wearing a sarong and creating so many different looks?
Lyloh sarongs are made in 3 sizes so you can create an outfit to suit your body shape. For me my upper body is smaller so I accentuate it with a Halter Maxi and wrap the Lyloh stretch belt around my waist. I also love the Booby Toob dress & the reactions on peoples faces when I tell them its a sarong. The Lyloh Accessory Kit is everything you need to maximise outfits including pins, the stretch belt (adjustable for the waist or hips), beaded elastics & a cute resin buckle.
When did you first become involved in fashion design?
I have been making my own clothes and revamping vintage finds since I learnt how to sew when I was four. The seed for the ‘stitch free’ Lyloh Outfit in a Box was planted when I finally accepted that my sewing is a bit too rough and not up to my Nan’s standards! Im a hands on learner so studying fashion design wasn’t really an option for me, I dived into the deep end of trial and error 3 years ago for the first Lyloh collection.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part is that I don’t feel or see it as a job. I am working the hardest I ever have but I work my own hours and love what I do. I love receiving pics of new outfits women have created with their Lyloh sarong. Its pretty nice to know that I can share with women the opportunity to feel proud of the outfit she created herself.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My Dad is a huge inspiration for me. I remember the tears rolling down my cheeks when I had huge production problems. He listened and calmly told me “the mountain is a tough climb but the view from the top is priceless”
Where would you like to go for a holiday next and why?
I would love to go back to Byron Bay with all of my girls for a summer holiday. I love the energy, pristine beaches, surf, music, dolphins, bicycles, beautiful people, farmers markets & yummy food!
