As season 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race approaches, we caught up with host, drag mother and executive producer RuPaul Charles to talk all things Drag Race!
What is the most rewarding thing about nurturing new talent on the show?
Introducing these brilliant, courageous queens to the rest of the world! RDR airs in over 90 different countries and my girls perform all over the globe.
Which aspects of your job are the most difficult?
Saying "sashay away" to a contestant after she lip-syncs for her life.
How does it feel to inspire drag queens and boys and girls all over the world?
I am motivated by love, music, colours and laughter. It excites me to think that other people are inspired by my experience. I work very hard to enjoy my life because I think of life as a wonderful gift.
Would you say that “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has unlocked a whole new generation of queens who otherwise would never come out and follow their dreams?
There is a new generation of queens that are fabulous and fearless. The queens on "RuPaul's Drag Race" have so much courage and beauty that it inspires everyone not only drag queens but anyone who has a dream.
Why is drag so controversial?
Drag has always been controversial because it makes a comedy out of personal identity. Drag says: ‘You can be whatever you want to be.’ People feel very uncomfortable when their identity is questioned. I think that the younger generation is less concerned with identity. I've just continued to do what I've always done, and the rest of the world has caught up. I think it was Deepak Chopra who said: ‘We are all God in drag.’
What is the secret for success as a drag queen?
The secret of success in every field is redefining what success means to you. It can’t be your parent’s definition, the media’s definition or your neighbor’s definition. Otherwise, success will never satisfy you. Personally, I experience success when I enjoy what I’m doing. I love the creative process even if the end result isn’t embraced by anyone else.
Who are some of your favorite stars, past and present?
Cher, David Bowie, Diana Ross, Kylie Minogue, Mo'Nique & Beyonce!
What is an inexpensive easy routine or product that can drastically change a women's facial appearance.
For both men and women, an eyelash curler is a must. It gives your eye the appearance of being well rested and wide-open.
For lips, do you prefer gloss or color?
I prefer both plus a lip-liner.
What are your feelings about shapewear? Padded underwear for a eye-catching booty?
I believe you should use whatever you can to get the silhouette you desire: padding, shapeware or control top pantyhose.
I can honestly say I really love them all but some items work better on my body than others. The key is knowing what works for you.
