Reese Witherspoon was worried she would never find a man who would accept her children after she got divorced.
The Oscar-winning actress - who has two children, Ava, 11 and Deacon, seven, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe - was concerned no guy would ever want to get close to her because of her personal situation until she met her current spouse, Hollywood agent Jim Toth.
She said: "You know, somebody close to me once said, 'Oh, no man will ever accept your children.'
"And I just thought it was the most horrifying thing someone has ever said to me in my entire life. I was determined to find somebody who would make that not true."
While Reese - who was recently hit by a car while out jogging in Santa Monica, but is now "resting comfortably at home" - is now happily married, she admits the end of her eight-year marriage to Ryan in 2007 was particularly stressful for everyone involved.
In an interview with Marie Claire magazine, she said: "I think Nora Ephron says in one of her books, 'You know, don't kid yourself, divorce is really hard on your children. It's really hard. Children will not be better for it.'
"I mean there are extenuating circumstances. I'm sure everybody's life is different, so I shouldn't say that. But it's really traumatic."
