Red Carpet Make-Up Tricks!

Copy the beauty look of your favourite celebrity from the 2010 Academy Awards.

Bright lips

Charlize Theron, Sandra Bullock and Maggie Gyllenhaal all rocked bright lips at this year’s Oscars. COVERGIRL celebrity makeup artist Molly R. Stern said of Maggie’s look: “The finished product was perfection. She looked like herself. Authentic, cool and beautiful.”

So how can you re-create the look at home? Make sure your lips are in great condition by exfoliating them lightly with The Lip Scrub by Sarah Happ, $29.95. This product gets rid of flaky skin. Celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Katie Holmes, Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson love it!

Next, apply a bright lip colour of your choice. On Oscar night Maggie Gyllenhaal went for NARS ’schiap’ lip color, $58, but you can choose a shade that suits your skin and your mood. Just make sure you pop it into your bag for late-night touch-ups!

Smokey eyes

Black sultry eyes paired with pale pink cheeks and nude lips was another popular look favoured by stars such as Nicole Richie and Jennifer Lopez.

To get the look, apply a light grey eye shadow like nc Satin Smooth Eyeshadow in Starry Sky, $17, all over the eye lid using a large brush, extending up to the outer corner of the eye and brow line. Then using a fine, angular brush, apply the same shade under the eye. Line the top and bottom inner rim of the eye using a heavy black kohl pencil and blend smoothly above the whole lash line.

Using a small rounded brush, apply a darker grey or silver eyeshadow like nc Satin Smooth Eyeshadow in Thunder or Ocean, $17, to the lash line around the whole eye. Wet the brush and smudge this darker shadow towards the brow bone.

Then apply a liquid eyeliner like nc Liquid Eye Definer Precision Liner Pen, $24, for added definition and a volumising mascara. Voila!

Soft curls

“Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz proved their red-carpet credentials yet again with gorgeous soft curls and show-stopping metallic dresses,” says hair stylist Dario Cotroneo. “What a nod to old-school Hollywood glamour!”

To get the look without the A-list entourage you’re going to need a clever little curling tool called MYCURL, $89.

Split your hair into six sections. Spray KMS Hot Spiral Spray, $28.50, onto one of these sections and roll hair around a vertical MYCURL to the level of your cheekbone. Repeat with the other sections.

Clamp your straightening irons over each MYCURL for five seconds then allow hair to cool for 15 minutes. While hair is cooling, use a comb to lift the roots and spray with hairspray, to create more volume while setting. After hair has cooled, remove all MYCURLs and run your fingers through your hair.
