Signed up for the City2Surf but feeling a bit overwhelmed? It's not too late to get your body and mind prepared.
Here, Rachael shares her health and wellness tips, when preparing for a long distance run.
Winter has well and truly hit us. Is there anything in particular you do, to keep the colds and flu at bay?
I try to keep healthy all year round. I think it’s about making sure your immune system is strong and your body gets all the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. I stick with my regular diet which contains lots fruit and veggies, lean proteins, and good fats like avocado and salmon, while also adding foods that help boost your immune system like ginger.
What are your tips for getting people moving when it’s particularly chilly and all you want to do is stay in bed that little bit longer….
I always love the way I feel after exercise so I try to use that feeling as motivation, and what better way to warm up than to get your blood moving with a run or yoga class?
How do you manage to keep active and juggle work commitments and motherhood?
I’m quite lucky because Michael (Rachael's husband) and I have different schedules. As his classes start at night, he looks after Violet in the morning, and then we swap over in the afternoon. Staying active has always been a priority for me. I always choose to do a workout I know I will enjoy so it doesn’t become a chore.
Besides running, what other forms of exercise are you loving?
I love dancing with my husband. Not only is it a great exercise, but it’s something fun we can do together. I like to mix my workouts up depending on how I feel on the day. I love swimming, yoga, Pilates, and even pushing Violet in the pram is a workout!
In training for a long distance run, does your diet change in any way? What foods do you ensure are always in your pantry/fridge?
Long runs, especially a challenging 14km one like the Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac, are all about endurance so you need to fuel your body with the foods that will keep you going. I’ve been adding more carbs to my diet to make sure I have the energy I need. I love brown rice sushi or wholemeal pasta. I always have quinoa, brown rice and chia seeds in my pantry. I use these as a base for a lot of the meals I cook.
When are you the most happiest, or feel your best self?
I love being outdoors and spending time with Misha and Violet. That’s why I am so excited for the City2Surf because they will be able to join me on course. We’re looking forward to it!
What do you like to do on a day off?
As my schedule can get quite crazy, I really enjoy any chance I get to unwind with my family. I also really appreciate time to myself, reading a book and sitting still.
What's your favourite travel destination?
It’s not overly exotic, however I really love going home to Townsville to spend time with family. I had such a great childhood there, we were always outdoors doing something active and I can’t wait for Violet to be old enough to start experiencing similar things!
