She's carved a business out of wearing bikinis, and is now Australia's most clickable export, having approached a million followers on Instagram. Here, we quiz Natasha Oakley on blogging, beaches, and of course bikinis!
Blogger and entrepreneur Natasha Oakley, 23, is giving us serious life envy. After launching website 'A Bikini A Day' with her best friend Devin Brugman in 2012, Tash has been posting pictures of herself everyday in a different bikini.
With a signature swimwear range and capsule collection for Sunglass Hut, the Aussie beauty is constantly travelling the world to the most exotic locations. We chat to Tash to find out more!
How did 'A Bikini A Day' come about?
My best friend Devin and I both grew up by the beach, so we basically lived in bikinis. Like some girls have obsessions with shoes and bags, we were obsessed with bikinis! One night when we were home in our LA apartment, we had the idea to make something more of our obsession and came up with the idea to create 'A Bikini A Day', which now allows us to share our love for the beach and bikini lifestyle with our readers.
It sounds like a dream job - travelling the world wearing bikinis and blogging about your experience - what’s a typical day like for you and Devin?
It goes without saying that I love my job but we definitely work very hard – we always have long days of either travelling, shooting or meetings. When we aren’t on a plane travelling from one destination to another, we are pretty much always creating content or working on projects and collaborations in the city we are in. Of course we do take the time to relax by the pool or on the beach when we can, but we will usually be doing emails at the same time. Travelling is my favourite thing to do, so we will always make sure to stop and take our surroundings in and appreciate how lucky we are to travel the world in our bikinis!
What other projects are you working on at the moment?
At the moment we are working on the next collection for our swimwear line, Monday Swimwear, and personally I have been working with Sunglass Hut for their new 94 Shades of Summer Campaign in Australia. It’s been a really fun project – we shot a short film about my favourite summer spots in Sydney and I curated a capsule collection on sunglasses alongside global ambassadors Georgia May Jagger and the Richards' sisters.
What are your top fashion tips for summer?
Summer style for me is all about keeping things simple and adding to a look with statement details such as a red lip and a great pair of sunglasses. I’m particularly loving round, pastel and embellished shades at the moment - there are sunnies for every occasion in my capsule collection at Sunglass Hut.
Do you have a favourite style of bikini?
I would have to say the classic triangle bikini - you can never go wrong with this style.
How do you stay in shape and body-confident all year round?
As I always need to be bikini body ready, for me it’s all about consistently eating healthy foods, working out and thinking positively, which I think is really important. From a beauty perspective, I also do little things like keeping my skin smooth and hydrated through exfoliating and moisturising and also protecting it from the sun when I can. Everything counts when you wear a bikini 365 days of the year!
Where is your favourite place (or places!) you’ve ever travelled?
My most recent favourite travel destination is Staniel Cay in The Bahamas. Not only was the scenery breathtaking, but we were also able to swim with pigs and feed sharks in the turquoise waters.
And what about your favourite summer spots in Australia?
I love Sydney in the summer, although I would have to say that Watego’s beach in Byron Bay is one of my favourite beaches in the world.
Who’s your style icon?
I love Rosie Huntington-Whitely, her style is classic yet sexy. I love simplicity and she does it so well.
What is always in your handbag?
My phone, a couple of pairs of sunglasses, a bikini, SPF moisturiser, lip balm and head phones.
