For a night on the town or a day at the desk, it's never been more fun to accessorise your outfit with on-trend nails.
When it comes to adding an extra element to even the simplest ensemble or creating a point of difference to your everyday look, nails are a quick and easy fix.
Much more cost-effective than a new pair of shoes and far less of a time investment than an afternoon in the hair salon, switching up your nail colour can take your look into an entirely new style stratosphere, for only a few bucks!
"These days we see as much thought go into our event nails as we would our makeup, hair or outfit," The Nail Lab owner, Monika Carvalho explains.
"We see brides booking their nail appointments for their wedding up to six months in advance, and visiting the salon months before the big day for a colour consultation not only for their nails, but for their bridal party."
In short: nails are a big thing right now.
Here are some of the trends Monika predicts will take over spring and summer this year.
Colours and textures
When it comes to fashion and beauty trends what's hot on the catwalk is finding its way to the cosmetics counter. Metallics are still having a moment, but in light shades for sunny spring and summer. On the flipside, matte shades of duck egg blue are adding a vintage vibe to the everyday nail.
Keep it Fun
"We see nails as a fun, creative way to express our personality and embrace trends that you might not be willing to wear otherwise," says Monika. While she is a master of trends, Monika is also a big believer in playing to your personal taste and going bold with whatever you feel like!
"Nail art is here to stay, but we'll see different takes on it each season," she says. "Negative space has been huge this season, where uncoloured nails peep through bold lacquers, much like cut outs in clothes. We will also see twists on classics like the scuffed French tip or a matte top coat over a classic nude."
Like most fashion trends, celebs are leading the pack on statement nails. "Two favourites would have to be Kim Kardashian and Rihanna," Monika says of the famous hands people seek to emulate. "What they have in common is their incredible manicurist - Kimmie Kyees - whose work we follow religiously!"
What to Wear for Weddings...
When it comes to choosing the right shade for a wedding, Monika suggests being led by the dress code. "Allow yourself to have fun with your fingers," she encourages. "Even the most sophisticated ball gown at a black tie wedding can be brought to life with a pop of colour on the nails."
... For the Races
Spring racing season is upon us, so this is always a time when elegance is essential. Monika suggests keeping it straightforward and chic. "Colour-wise, compliment your head wear," she suggests. "Consider gel polish, as nails can get a real beating at an event that goes all day - or over several days!" If you haven't booked this in already, do so now as the waiting lists can be frightening.
...For a Night on the Town
The one rule of thumb - pun intended - is to have fun with your weekend nails! "This is your opportunity to express personality through your nails," she says, suggesting a metallic stripe or a feature nail. For extra effect, clash the shade you wear on each of your fingers and go for a different shade on the toes too!
For work, you can't go wrong with a classic red or nude, Monika advises. "Keep the shape short and square with a rounded edge," she suggests. "Want to play a little with the basics? Then opt for a matte top coat over a nude base."
