Lady Gaga's confronting new video Til It Happens To You, focuses on sexual assault.
The pop singer has just released a controversial new video, but it's not what fans might expect. Gaga herself doesn't even appear in it.
Til It Happens To You was made as a tie-in with US documentary The Hunting Ground, aimed at creating awareness of sexual violence on American college campuses. The song lyrics highlight a shocking statistic, "one in five women will be sexually assualted this year."
Co-written with Oscar-winning songwriter Diane Warren, the black and white film is directed by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, and also stars Twilight actress Nikki Reed as one of the victims.
The video may be shocking for some to watch, but that's exactly the point of it. Lady Gaga, 29, dedicated the song to all survivors of sexual violence. "We have a responsibility to protect victims of sexual assault", she said.
We hope u feel our love&solidarity through the song & perhaps find some peace in knowing u r not alone through this film #TilItHappensToYou— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) September 18, 2015
The singer has always been active in her support for various causes, but perhaps this issue hits home a little harder. Lady Gaga has been vocal in the past about her own experience of sexual assault when she was 19-years-old.
Proceeds from the film clip will be donated to sexual assault survivors.
